GUEST SPEAKER—Jo Anne Stratton — The Fenwick Scholarship 2009
Jo thanked us for her welcome and went on to tell us that she had been brought up in Canada. Jo also told us about her Dad being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and how her passion for MS stemmed from her personal experience of the disease. MS is a debilitating disease that causes blurred vision and difficulty in walking. Jo told us MS occurs when myelin, a fatty substance that wraps around the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, becomes damaged. The aim of her project is to understand how new cells called Oligodendrocytes (phew) are regenerated in the brain after Oligodendrocyte death. Jo told us how her study uses a ‘mouse model’, she then went on to show us the graphs she uses to prove the results of her study. A wonderful project and we look forward to further reports.
